DIY Sugar Face Polish

In the past, I’ve spent big bucks on sugar face polish from Fresh. Recently I ran out, and in my quest to save money, I made my own, which I ended up LOVING! Here’s an easy tutorial on how to make your own.

Items you will need:
Coconut oil (refined or unrefined) – $7.50 at Sprouts, Raley’s, Whole Foods or health food store
Tea tree oil or essential oil – $8 – $16 at stores mentioned above
White sugar – $5 or less at any grocery store
Plastic or glass jar – $2 – $5 at thrift stores or Walmart
Scooper or spoon
Fork
Ribbon or twine
*You can make 4 for around $20 in materials.

How to do it:

1. Clean out your jar or container, then scoop coconut oil into the jar until the jar is about 2/3 full. We used jars we had around the house. My friend Kelly and I each made one – I used unrefined coconut oil and added a few drops of vitamin E, and she used refined coconut oil and added tea tree oil. Unrefined coconut oil smells like coconut, so it has its own lovely scent. Refined coconut oil has no scent, so that’s what you want to use if you’d like to add scent, or tea tree oil, which is a natural antiseptic and great for acne. As an alternative, you can zest the peel of a lemon or an orange for a great scent and extra vitamin C exfoliation.

2. Start adding white sugar and mixing it in with a fork. You’re going to need to add a TON of sugar, so don’t be afraid. Keep adding sugar and stirring.

3. Stir it up until it’s fairly chunky, test it on your hand, and add more sugar if you like. Get it to the consistency you want.

4. Close it up and tie a ribbon or piece of twine around it if you’re giving it as a gift.

Voila!

Using these on your face feels GREAT. The sugar is a perfect exfoliator. Use it twice a week before bed. When you rinse it off with warm water, the sugar completely dissolves and some of the coconut oil stays on your skin. Coconut oil is VERY moisturizing. After rinsing the face polish off your skin, pat your face dry with a clean towel and put a bit of night cream on. You’ll be glowing the next day.
